Digital Ukrainian Drama Translations library is up and running

Online library of the Ukrainian Drama Translations will be promoting the Ukrainian drama worldwide.

Website is created within framework of “Theatrical windows. Work in progress”, a project of Theatre na Zhukah with financial support from the International Relief Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany and Goethe-Institut Ukraine, in partnership with the Ukrainian Institute, global initiative Worldwide Readings Project, Birkbeck Center for Contemporary Theater (UK) and UkrDramaHub platform.

The new platform will help foreign directors and producers find contemporary Ukrainian plays for staging, and the contemporary Ukrainian playwrights will be able to promote their creative products and establish new professional contacts. The library already features over 70 texts in 5 languages representing the contemporary Ukrainian drama. The fund will keep expanding its collection.

Dmytro Ternovyi, Project Coordinator, points out that this is yet another tool that brings the Ukrainian and European cultures closer together. “The more we have such tools for the promotion of our own culture around the world, the better”.

Website features a convenient search engine that allows to generate requests by the name of the author or translator, or by the language of translation, genre, period of writing, topic, text length or the number of characters. Each text is accompanied by an ID card in English with a synopsis of the play and information about the author and the translator.

Website allows to read a considerable part of the text. Full text, whether for reading or commercial or non-commercial use, can be obtained directly from the copyright holder whose contacts are provided on page 1 of each play.

The current basis of the library comprises of the texts provided by the initiative Worldwide Readings Project and the Ukrainian Institute under program Transmission.ua: drama on the move.

Ukrainian playwrights can submit translations of their plays by filling out the relevant form online. Prior to publishing, an expert council comprising of such professionals as Elli Salo (Finnish, Swedish, Slovak), Molly Flynn (English), Miloslav Juráni (Slovak), Iulia Popovici (Romanian) and Anna Korzeniowska-Bihun (Polish), will evaluate the quality of translation.
